“Kimi to Ai ni Naru”

Standard

“Kimi to Ai ni Naru” is the spin-off about the relationship between JnM side characters Kagemi Yamiko and Manama Riku. Yamiko is the best friend of Takamoto Haruhi, who has a slightly bigger role in Jinsei no Minna itself.

I picked the title “Kimi to Ai ni Naru” from a song by Oda Kaori which seems to be exactly about their relationship (I was really baffled when I found out the lyrics). It’s a phrase that’s difficult to translate, it’s really Japanese. If I were to try anyway, it would be something like ‘Becoming Love With You’… sounds a bit weird, doesn’t it?

It has a very simple shoujo genre story. A girl who seems to be the most common girl in the world and who has an alarmingly low sense of self-worth starts her new school year, where she gets challenged from day 1 on when she is appointed class representative by her homeroom teacher. Her fellow class rep is a boy who doesn’t seem to have any emotions. At first she thinks he is a real oddball, but as time passes she learns how to deal with him and his socially awkward way of handling things. They both grow closer to each other than they’d ever imagined they would when they first met.

Characters
Kagemi Yamiko
The story’s heroine. She is an introvert girl who yearns for something special to happen in her life. She sees herself as the most common girl ever, she lives in a normal house in a normal neighborhood where nothing ever happens. She lives with her mother and little brother. Her father is always away on business trips and he rarely comes home, so Yamiko is angry at him for making her mother feel lonely. Despite that, her parents are still together and life is peaceful except for her monster-like little brother who always pulls pranks on her. Yamiko’s best friend is Haruhi, they’ve been together since elementary school. They share everything with each other.
Besides Yamiko’s desire for a miracle to happen to her, she also suffers from a severe minority complex which causes her to occasionally fall into a state of depression, in the worst case for a few days. She gets envious of other people easily and turns it back onto her own incompetence and commonness. This also has to do with the fact that her mother is a bit conservative and doesn’t go along with trends or new modern times, which makes Yamiko feel left behind in both social experience as issues to talk about with friends and classmates.
Yamiko’s worst fear is lightning. When she was on a family picknick when she was small, she once saw someone getting struck by lightning, and that has caused a trauma for her. Whenever she sees lightning, she experiences that moment again, so to say. Other things she doesn’t like are History, bugs and unfaithfulness.
Aside from her gloomy aspects, Yamiko is a sweet girl and a loyal friend. She is realistic enough to know that love isn’t all rose petals; her parents are living proof. She is a bit naive, trusts people easily and has a weak spot for both people and objects that give off a certain amount of innocence and cuteness.

Manama Riku
The male protagonist of the story. He is a boy who lost his emotions at a certain point in his childhood. He used to be a sweet, energetic and kind boy who was respected and loved by his classmates and friends. However, things changed as his alcoholic father returned home one night in a violent mood and started throwing a fit. When Riku had to be taken to hospital to recover from his mental and physical injuries, his father abandoned them. Riku hasn’t been the same since. He lives with his mother, who has been caring for him more than anyone. When he gets accepted into Yume High, the principal and his homeroom teacher make a promise with his mother to help him regain his emotions gradually in any way possible.
Riku slowly finds his place within his class, he gets appointed class rep and eventually even manages to make friends.
Things that he doesn’t like are alcohol, people who bring themselves down and lying.
A peculiar characteristic that he has is that he is drawn with his eyes closed. This is to emphasize his emotionless state, but to stress it even more, there are cases where his eyes open. This special phenomenon only occurs when he experiences a very strong emotion – it turns him back to how he was for a moment. In the previous years, this has never been the case, but as he meets Yamiko, it tends to happen more and more occasionally.

Kagemi Makiko
Yamiko’s mother.

Kagemi Shouta
Yamiko’s little brother.

Manama Anna
Riku’s mother.

Takamoto Haruhi
Yamiko’s best friend.

Murashima Kei
Riku’s best friend.

Murakita Suzuko
A girl who befriends Yamiko when she gets placed into another class in her second year.

Midorizawa Yuiko
Homeroom teacher of Class 1-B.

Yume-sama
The principal of Yume High.

I’ve always been searching for a place full of real smiles
The future reflected in that transparent warmth, and I couldn’t move
Piling up hopes in the tomorrow that we can’t see
Rather than repeating the anxious nights,
I want to protect the small happiness that is here right now

I softly remember the constellation that only I know about
in the nameless starry sky that floats in your clear blue eyes
Even if I were to disappear in the deep darkness,
I will never lose these memories that lead on towards you

‘Tell me…’ When you touched the door of my heart for the first time with,
I had already become used to spending time alone
The pain that stabs my heart, the feelings that won’t reach,
I told a lie so that you wouldn’t notice
I thought that there was no reason for loneliness

The miracle I encountered that day
Was connected to the prologue of a story that no-one could have imagined
It’s fine even if it’s just common words, I want to convey them immediately
They are flapping their wings towards you
‘Let’s go…’ I won’t lose my way anymore

Did I wish for it somewhere?
I don’t even know my destination
I can hear your voice
informing me of ‘the beginning’

I will draw a secret constellation for the two of us
in the nameless starry sky that floats in your clear blue eyes

The miracle I encountered that day
Was connected to the prologue of a story that no-one could have imagined
It’s fine even if it’s just common words, I want to convey them immediately
They are flapping their wings towards you
because I will always be by your side

For whom do you sing?
A squeaky serenade
Wandering around with no place to go,
I shed a tear

I can’t go back anymore to that day when I understood eternity
I am being absorbed by a mirage

The stardust dances on the melody of the spiral night
Please bestow the kiss of the ruby upon me only
Don’t erase the little bit of warmth I hid within my dream

For whom do you wish?
A beautiful waltz
Ah, the more I reach out my hands, the more separated we become

The strangely smiling moon of the equator
Where are you heading…? There is no answer

The more I think about you, the more I am eaten into
I change even pain into a certain happiness

The stardust dances on the melody of the spiral night
Please bestow the kiss of the ruby upon me only
Don’t erase the little bit of warmth I hid within my dream

8. Mugen

Go to sleep, just for now, inside of me
Don’t go anywhere…

In the ultramarine-coloured night swaying in the depths of slumber,
I am searching for a star with no intersections
The fingertips that are longing for you are wandering about in the dark,
and I can’t break free even though I struggle; I’m drowning in the sea of love

In the soft breathing, even my heart starts shaking
As if I’m in an entwining beautiful spider’s web
I can’t move… forgive me

Sleeping while being embraced by your arms,
I’m fine with throwing away everything
Stop making things like illusions in which I’m still a good child
Search for the real me
I’m always waiting…

Will the memories of our touching hands and our overlapping lips
disappear some day?
It’s almost like melting snow…

Each time I see your gentle smile, it becomes painful
I will break it right now
Embrace me with your warm voice rather than with your lips

Like a child, I call your name
tracing your figure
The words that don’t reach dance in the sky and will rain down before long
If you were to say that these feelings are a sin,
then I would sacrifice everything

Do you understand?
The ‘obvious’ isn’t always by your side
When you realize it, like a stray child,
Don’t let go of my gaze
Tell me
Sleeping while being embraced by your arms
I’m fine with throwing away everything, really
I can’t be stopped, I can’t be a good child
Search for the real me
I’m always waiting… always…

Miracle Flight

Standard

Miracle Flight is a very happy song about going on a trip to the galaxy and leaving all your loads and worries behind. This time, I’ve actually included parts of the lyrics within the drawing. I wanted to create a symbolic image of flying away and leaving your heavy things for the light and beautiful things.

It features Yura, in an outfit which is based on Nana Mizuki’s outfit when she sang Miracle Flight live at her concert Live Diamond in 2009. It is based on a stewardess outfit which fits into the concept of going on a space trip. She is standing on a big star that is bringing her higher and higher into the sky. The tears and dark clouds are behind her and she heads right towards the stars and the love above. The red planet in the corner of the drawing is Mars, which is mentioned in the lyrics. I am actually very satisfied with this drawing since it really pictures the essence of the song (I think).

(You can find my English translation of this song under ‘Nice Music’ > ‘Nana Mizuki’ > ‘Alive and Kicking’ > ‘Miracle Flight’.)
