8. Mezamashi Dokei

On top of the fridge is a gas bill
It’s almost the end of the month
I have to go pay for it

After I come out of the mansion, I realize
I’ve forgotten something
and I have to go back to my room to get it

Even though I ran with all my might
the train doors close right before my eyes
I stand petrified on the station platform,
regretting that I got left behind

The only things that increase are the times I am late
My alarm clock
Why am I not able to wake up 5 minutes earlier?
I should buy one today as I go home
A fourth alarm clock

Yesterday night, I used the air-conditioning,
the television and the microwave,
and the breaker shut down

It was so dark I couldn’t see
It was so high I couldn’t reach
That moment was the emptiest

The living-on-my-own life I so wished for
I admit it’s freeing and fun, but
I realize, maybe tonight I should phone my parents
to express my appreciation

As I am thinking, it starts raining
Now that I think of it, I remembered
the laundry  that I put up last night is still hanging from the veranda
I still can’t go home
and there’s no one to fetch it either

The voices that I thought were loud
and the dinner that I complained about
All of those things they were warm

I thought of living alone, but it isn’t that simple
I wished it for myself and decided on it myself
I can’t wake up on my own
but I have to do my best
I’ll definitely buy one on my way home
a fourth alarm clock
