8. Hanabi

Click-clack, click-clack
the sound of geta*
Puddles of water, wearing handheld fans, the six of us
went out on that summer night

You were wearing a white yukata and a hair decoration
Every time someone talked to me
I couldn’t look at you properly

In the silent night,
a single sound echoed
and the people quickened their pace

The crowds of people at the riverbank
Underneath the sky where yellow fireworks spread,
whenever I looked around I searched for you

Water balloons and goldfish scooping
Loud voices flying past each other
the street packed with stalls

The town was different than usual
The night was different than usual
I felt like it could suddenly change

So that you wouldn’t be washed away
by the many passing people
I started talking to you, walking next to you

I don’t want this night of fireworks
to end as just a memory
Before summer goes away
Ah…

The crowds of people at the riverbank
Underneath the sky where red fireworks spread,
I grabbed your hand and started running
*Japanese wooden clogs
